Program Mission Statement: To advance the clinical competency of physical therapists in the practice of orthopedics by providing comprehensive, evidence-based education to develop and retain exceptionally qualified board-certified specialists in orthopedic physical therapy. Our Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program provides an advanced, evidence-based education to physical therapists who aspire to obtain their board certification in orthopedic physical therapy.
We utilize evidence-based research to promote and encourage superior clinical reasoning skills that advance clinical competency in the assessment, management, and treatment of individuals with sports injuries.
We aim to retain exceptionally qualified specialists who collaborate within a multidisciplinary organization and provide optimal outcomes in patient care. We strive to demonstrate clinical excellence by cultivating an environment that promotes professionalism, growth, and continuous improvement in the delivery of value-based health care services that address the needs of our communities.
Our residency program takes place across two locations, in New Providence and Clark. One facility focused on orthopedics in a multidisciplinary outpatient setting and the other a more sports focused orthopedic outpatient practice.
Residents will have a variety of opportunities to shadow orthopedic physicians, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists. Residents will also have unique learning opportunities across the Atlantic Rehabilitation service line.
Residents will receive mentoring from highly trained physical therapists at our comprehensive outpatient physical therapy facilities as they care for a broad range of injures for individuals of all ages in the orthopedic population.
About our program
The program is full-time residency that is one year in length. Residents will be expected to work 40-hour weeks for 52 weeks. At least 300 hours will be dedicated to education opportunities with an additional 150 hours of one-on-one mentoring. Assignments may require study hours outside of the normal work week. Opportunities for community events, education, or mentoring may occasionally occur on the weekend.
The curriculum has been designed according to the Orthopedic Description of Residency Practice to prepare students to sit for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Exam offered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. The Atlantic Health Orthopedic Residency program is aligned with the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education's ( ABPTRFE) Quality Standards
The curriculum includes didactic learning experiences through in-person lectures and labs as well as asynchronous learning opportunities through on-line videos and a discussion board, journal clubs, self-directed projects, written assignments, educational activities, and weekly mentoring in the clinic.
