Newly designed inpatient and outpatient units help meet the growing need for cancer services in Monmouth County

FREEHOLD, NJ - APRIL 22, 2025 - Aiming to advance cancer care in the region, CentraState Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, recently completed construction to inpatient and outpatient units of the Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState. Timely upgrades include a new state-of-the-art patient care unit for oncology and medical surgical patients, a new medical oncology office for Atlantic Medical Group Oncology and a renovated infusion suite – further expanding patient access to cancer services and specialists.

"We are proud to deliver a triad of patient-centered enhancements that will also help drive the continued growth of the Statesir Cancer Center," said Thomas W. Scott, FACHE, FABC, president and CEO of CentraState Healthcare System. "The improvements further our commitment to ensure patients in Central New Jersey receive the highest standard of cancer care, while also focusing on comfort and convenience."

Contemporary Inpatient Unit

Located on the hospital's third floor, the new inpatient oncology and medical surgical unit offers a calming space for cancer patients who require hospitalization. With a healing nature motif, each of the 14 private rooms includes modern conveniences such as an en suite bathroom, a switchable privacy window, remote controlled room lights, a flat screen TV and a full reclining chair for patients or family members. Additionally, rooms are equipped with a ceiling lift to promote mobility. The unit also has one negative or positive pressure room (isolation room) to maintain infection control. A dedicated team of certified nurses specializing in cancer services provide personalized care to patients, including those who need cardiac monitoring.

Co-Located Medical Oncology and Infusion Suites

A new medical oncology suite located in the Donna O'Donnell, RN Medical Arts Building is the home of Atlantic Medical Group Oncology at CentraState. The office expands clinical capacity and provides easier access to specialized cancer services from across the Atlantic Health System. Atlantic Medical Group Oncology specialists provide advanced care for adults facing a broad spectrum of cancers and blood disorders, including breast, colorectal, ovarian, GI, head and neck and pancreatic cancers, lymphoma and leukemia, as well as benign hematological issues.

A shared waiting room will connect the medical oncology clinical space to the adjacent Jean Mehr Infusion Center at CentraState. This enhanced space provides patients with comfortable, convenient, compassionate care delivered by specially trained nurses in the safety of a hospital setting. The infusion center, containing 11 infusion bays and one private room, is equipped with bright windows, supportive reclining chairs, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi and dimmable lighting. The infusion center also offers expanded hours to accommodate patients' schedules.

"With these notable enhancements, as well as the recent additions of top surgical talent and cutting-edge treatments and surgical techniques, we are proudly providing a level of cancer care that has traditionally only been offered at large metropolitan cancer centers right here in Monmouth County," said Alexander Itskovich, MD, medical director of the Statesir Cancer Center. "From the latest minimally invasive procedures and robotic-assisted platforms to cancer prevention and early detection programs, as well as expanded clinical trials and a genetics program, there's a lot happening in cancer care at CentraState."
