Chitharanjan Rao, MD

Dr. Chitharanjan Rao is a neurology specialist at Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, part of Atlantic Health System. Board-certified in neurology, neuromuscular medicine, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he is also board-certified in electrodiagnostic medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and certified as a specialist in multiple sclerosis and in rare neuro-immunological disorders by the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. Prior to joining Atlantic Health System, Dr. Rao served patients across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the UK, and India. He also taught neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in Pennsylvania in addition to Grant Medical College in India. He is the author of multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Dr. Rao earned his medical degree from the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) in India and followed that with a residency in internal medicine at Grant Medical College/Sir J.J. Hospital, and a subsequent doctorate in medicine (neurology) also at the University of Bombay. He earned membership in the Royal College of Physicians in London, UK, and trained in clinical neurophysiology, with specialized training in epilepsy surgery and neurophysiological monitoring at Queen Elizabeth Neuroscience Center, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS trust in the UK. After moving to the U.S., he completed a residency in neurology at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, and a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. Dr. Rao is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine, American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, American Headache Society, American Epilepsy Society and the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK. In addition to English, he speaks several Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, and Gujarati. Dr. Rao is part of Atlantic Medical Group and a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
