October 1, 2025 – Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center recently discovered a significant piece of local history from its original All Souls Hospital site located at the former Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute (ARI) on Mount Kemble Avenue in Morristown.
Over the summer, as demolition progressed on the now closed facility, the site construction team uncovered a fascinating item from more than a century ago -- a commemorative stone dedicating All Souls Hospital, founded in 1893 by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. It was found embedded in the floor of the main entrance area, where it was methodically removed and relocated to Morristown Medical Center’s front lawn at 100 Madison Avenue. There it is preserved as a memorial to the hospital’s history and available for visitors, team members and the community to appreciate.
“Morristown Medical Center’s rich history is literally, rooted in the Town of Morristown, and we are proud to establish a new home for the beautiful stone as a reminder of our past,” said Trish O’Keefe, President, Morristown Medical Center and Senior Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive, Atlantic Health. “We are excited about our vibrant future as the hospital continues to serve thousands of patients every day and earns dozens of prestigious accolades for the extraordinary care we deliver.”
In 2019 in-patient services at the site ceased after Atlantic Health opened a 38-bed rehab center at Giralda Farms in Madison. The Mt. Kemble facility was temporarily reactivated in 2020, when it served as part of Atlantic Health’s response to COVID-19. All Souls Hospital became the Community Medical Center in 1973, and in 1977, the center was purchased by what was then named, Morristown Memorial Hospital. In 2011, Morristown Memorial changed its name to Morristown Medical Center.
