What you need to know about sleep studies

In-depth evaluation

A thorough diagnosis of sleep disorders begins with a detailed assessment that includes:

  • Physical examination
  • Review of medications and family history
  • Polysomnography (sleep study)

In some cases, we may recommend patients maintain a sleep diary or use a medical device to track sleep patterns for one to two weeks.

Role of sleep studies

Sleep studies are the cornerstone of our diagnostic approach. These painless and non-invasive tests record the quality and quantity of your sleep, providing critical data to:

  • Identify sleep-related breating disorders, like sleep apnea.
  • Detect movement disorders that disrupt rest.
  • Diagnose issues with initiating or maintaining sleep.
  • Evaluate behavioral sleep disorders.

What to expect during a sleep study

Sleep study overview

If you are scheduled for a sleep study with us, you can expect a comfortable environment with hotel-like rooms.

Arrive between 8:30pm and 9:15pm for preparation, where small sensors will be placed on your scalp, face, chest, abdomen, and legs. You'll sleep at your regular bedtime while we monitor your brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, heart activity, and breathing. You can leave the next morning between 6:00 and 7:00am. A physician will review your results and discuss them with you at a follow-up visit.

Home sleep studies

Your physician may determine that a home sleep test is an option for you. The home sleep testing device is simple to use and comfortable to wear, but diagnosis is limited to verifying the presence of sleep apnea and its severity. Other types of sleep disorders require a visit to our sleep center. For your convenience, the equipment and instructions can either be picked up in person at our center or mailed to your home.

Testing for narcolepsy

Patients who have excessive daytime sleepiness and are suspected of having narcolepsy will receive a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) on the day following their overnight sleep test. During the exam, you will have five opportunities to nap throughout the day for two hours at a time while electrical activity is recorded from your brain, eyes and chin muscles. How long it takes for you to fall asleep each time will also be measured. Breakfast and lunch are provided and the study concludes at 5:00pm.
